Food Access and Security

Having access to nutritious food is a basic human need. Food security means having access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Nutrition security means consistent access, availability, and affordability of foods and beverages that promote well-being, prevent disease, and, if needed, treat disease.

Lack of transportation and long distances between residences and supermarkets or grocery stores also affect access to healthy foods. Residents are at risk for food insecurity in neighborhoods where transportation options are limited, the travel distance to stores is greater, and there are fewer supermarkets.

Camden

In Camden City, about 40 percent of residents live around the poverty level.

Camden

In 2022, an estimated 942,604 New Jerseyans did not have enough to eat.
An increase of 89% from year-earlier totals.

Surveys of hunger in Camden have found that as many as 65 percent of the city's residents experience some degree of food insecurity. At the same time, more than two-thirds of Camden residents live in communities with low supermarket access.”
