MAD COOL Girls – Health Empowerment Course for Girls

Principal Investigator: Laura Liang, DrPH, CHES, CPH

Community Partners: MAD COOL Community, Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School, and the Boys & Girls Club of Newark

Location: Newark

Adolescent health and well-being are critical components of overall population health, with long-lasting implications for physical, emotional, and social development. MAD COOL Girls is an innovative health empowerment course from the non-profit MAD COOL COMMUNITY designed for adolescent girls (ages 12-17). Through a video-module-based course on a private technology platform with community and social support components and in-person coaching, MAD COOL Girls seeks to improve mental and physical health by increasing self-empowerment (as measured by self-efficacy) through health education (nutrition and exercise) and lifestyle skill-building (building assertiveness, time management, organizational and stress management skills, building healthy eating and exercise consistency).

MAD COOL Girls also focuses on helping girls build a sense of personal identity, increase self-esteem, and support a sense of life purpose.
